Laughing (g)ass

I thought I was a nice guy
A jolly laughable chap
Yet, how little did I know

My jokes were crude
And hurtful and rude
I laughed away all my friends

One day I got permission
To be a fucking jerkoff
And anger from deep, erupted

This allowed a balance
A wholeness, strength, authenticity
I thought I was, but wasn’t me

The prompt at dVerse https://dversepoets.com/2018/02/06/poetics-pentimento is change of mind. So this above, I rewrote, below. Which do you prefer?

I thought I was a nice spy
A molly erascable chap
Yet, how little did I know

My loves were crude
And hurtful and rude
I laughed away all my lovers

One day I got permission
And a license to kill
And blood from deep, erupted

This allowed a war
A power, strength, ruthless
I thought I was cold, but i wasn’t me
