Amid kale and scots pine
Her footprint, broken
Cracked in half.
Her narrow shoe, left
By the shore of the lake
Worn, torn, holding
A puddle of regret

That is such a punch of a poem. That abandoned shoe – what a great image.

I like this too. The lines, terse and sharp are like regret.

I read it as being about a girl turned mermaid, leaving behind the shoe — as if the shoe has regrets about not being able to with her.
