Behind the gawking throng

Behind the skirts and shirts

And pocket books

Behind the cameras, neckties

Behind the finger pointers

Behind the railing, fence

Behind the iron bars

Behind the safari hats

Behind the long whiskers

Behind the resigned eyes

There the wild thing dies

  1. Your quadrille reminds me of Rilke’s panther, Eric. I like the way you began with what the animal sees, the ‘gawking throng’, things we would not notice as part of the crowd. The shift to the iron bars is a hint at the tragic ending. I was gripped.
